The Sachet Revolution: Breaking Barriers of Access
A story of how a tiny pouch reshaped industries, democratized consumption, and made products once reserved for the rich accessible to the common man.
SACHET ECONOMY
- Sachet is not just a small pouch, it is not even a product packing form. It encompasses a deep social philosophy, a social justice, and equity to all.
It is the embodiment of the core thamizh ethos, it is the avowal to universal kinship, that says “‘யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர்” – “at all are (my) kith and kin” which is the bedrock of our civilization.
“What a rich man enjoys the common man should be able was the grand vision of the humble teacher turned entrepreneur, Mr. Chinni Krishnan. He was a creative genius who lived in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, in the 1950s and 60s, and passed away unknown but not before he conceived this small little pouch that was to prove to be a giant transformer of business, ably carried forward by his illustrious sons later.
- Accessibility/Affordability is the quintessence, the DNA of the Sachet philosophy – achieved by reducing the quantity of the same quality product or service that the rich and affluent enjoy, to make one unit cost of purchase small and affordable, and thus make it accessible to the common man.
The Concept, Form’ it took in the innovative mind of Chinni Krishnan was humble, but valiant. Sachet – the little pouch – that could proliferate across the society, to deliver a body blow to the hegemony and monopoly of the mega corporations that were having a strangle-hold on markets.
Like the biblical, diminutive David who brought down the mighty Goliath, like the inexorable public will that brought the oppressive Berlin Wall down crashing, the ubiquitous little Sachet has, but silently, wrought a socio-economic revolution in the 21st century.
In the hindu mythology there are many avatars of Sri Krishna (Vishnu) One of them was the diminutive vamana avatar that transformed into a mighty Visvarūpa, destroying the Maha Bali. This Chinni Krishna (CK) Avatar similarly gave the Sachets concept to modern world, to bring down the dominance of the mighty few.
- Philip Kotler gave 4Ps to the world for marketing success. CK gave the 5th P namely Packaging, which is the cutting edge for the sachet revolution.
This concept is not only a social philosophy, but it is also a creative, innovative outlook, principle, concept, and capability!. Innovation can be defined as the faculty to conceive some new, hitherto non-existent product or service or form or process or outlook – first in one’s mind that is still not there physically, and then create it, physically, validate it, and offer to serve the mankind.
Thus, giving a product or service services in lesser (down to the least of a single-use) volume (magnitude) to make it affordable and thus make it as affordable as possible, is what this Sachet has done.
When an innovation creates a new, hitherto-fore non-existent segment and market, either completely new or at the fringes/boundaries of an existing market/segment, it has come to be known as a “Blue Ocean” strategy, phenomenon, concept, and of course from it, a framework.
What Sachet has done is precisely this too!
- Finally, the Sachet is not Social, Innovation philosophies alone. It is also a commercial economic philosophy, principle and concept!
Globalisation is a 21st century reality as we all know. In such a world, for businesses and institutions to grow, their ability the Scale is another imperative.
Three things are needed for achieving Scalability, excellent Product/Service, very large markets, and very high accessibility & affordability to buy the said product/service by many if not all. Sachet made this possible for the world of business and commerce and services in one masterstroke.
- India has seen many revolutions since independence – Green, White, Blue, Pink, Digital, etc. Sachet is the less known of them, which however is the greatest, creating the very growth of Indian GDP.
Thus Chinni Krishnan is rightly to be known as the Father of Sachet Revolution* which was/is truly a great boon to the common man.
